Football Manager Motivation: Part 1
Transfers We all get to the point where we simply lose our love for FM every year, well I do. This 4 part series will look at the different real-life factors that could motivate you to play Football Manager 2009 more. We will be debating and reviewing what type of people are motivated to play FM by different factors, and we will be investigating what is the main motivation to play Football Manager 2009. This first issue, will look at real-life transfers. More about that later.
The series will also look at Real-life tactics! Yay! real-life transfers do motivate me! “”I see Argyle’s new signing in real life or someone else and want to buy them in the game. A classic example is Jamie Mackie. Argyle bought him in real life and he has a -5 in game. Still wanted him though. Also when you see all the clauses, it looks all professional so I do it that way aswell.”"Thanks King Matty. Matty is, as most people are, influenced to do things on FM by real-life happenings. Especially transfers. If you are a Manchester United fan, they may have signed Deco and Kaka in real-life.
Well, that’s a dream partnership, and i can guarantee a lot of people will open up a quick game, and head-straight in the direction of signing them two players. After all, ‘Football Manager 2009 is the world’s most realistic Football Management sim’ according to miles Jacobson. So, surely you want it to be even more realistic, by playing the game as up to date as possible. And in stead of downloading Transfer db’s, maybe you want to set yourself a challenge of signing Deco and Kaka on Fm, and emulate Sir Alex and his Man Utd. team.
There is no doubt people are motivated to play FM when there club spends 30M on a superstar player. But, as a challenge, why not play as the team who sold them, and try and find a replacement for there superstar? I always do this, and again this is being motivated by the real-life transfer saga’s. Help! I’m strange….. Okay, so your not strange, but there will only be a few odd ones out on this site that do not attempt to follow in their supported club’s footsteps in FM.
You may not do it all the time, but probably 90% of people are influenced by real-life happenings at some point. Yamo is a very very strange person…. “”Well real life and FM, its like forums and real life they are separate. I just play FM to relax i don’t really think about who’s signing who in real life, i play FM for a laugh, try and do what many can’t. Watching Hull sign Halmosi doesn’t want me to go on FM and sign Halmosi as is he that good on FM? I sign players on FM who are good not players who are signed in real life, you may say thats realistic, but do i really care about it? NO!!”" Yamo raises a good point though.
When you support a smaller team, like Hull, or a Lower League team, it’s hard to be amazed by a 300k signing. Hull aren’t exactly going to sign Villa, Silva and Henry are they? So it is hard to be motivated when you support a smaller team, that aren’t exactly splashing the cash. It’s also important to be the MANAGER. Your the manager in Fm, and you probably want to do things your own way, rather than emulating real-life, and after all FM is just for a laugh, something to have fun and pass the time with.
Conclusion: It’s obvious that alot of people are influenced and motivated by real-life transfers. I for one, am motivated if Middlesbrough sign a good player (For example Alves in January) and things like that do make me play Fm again. It’s safe to say we all go through dry patches where we become slightly bored of FM, especially at this time of year, and with the transfer window upon us in real life, ti can only be a good thing for the majority of FM players that are in-fact influenced by multi-million pound player deals. Although when you look at people who prefer Lower league Management, or support a Lower League team, then it’s clear that they have trouble finding 200k signings interesting and exciting.
Transfers are a deciding factor for most people in terms of re-starting FM, however I don’t think we have found the most influential factor of real-life motivation yet.
